Deadline August 31, 2017

Journal of Small Business & Entrepreneurship (JSBE) would like to invite you to contribute to its special issue dedicated to advancing our understanding entrepreneurial orientation (EO) and business practices in micro and small enterprises (MSEs) operating in low-income and emerging economies. In most of these economies, MSEs are a major source of employment and income. Individuals working alone are often a common feature of these MSEs and self-employment has become a central element for sustainability. Detailed surveys have shown that as many as a quarter of all people of working age in low-income and emerging economies are engaged in MSE activities (Mead and Liedholm, 1998; World Bank, 2006). Therefore, the share of the total population engaged in such activities is substantial.

While MSEs are a source of employment and income for many people in low-income and emerging economies, their EO and business practices are implicit in much of the literature on entrepreneurship and small business management. This special issue welcomes theoretical and/or rigorous empirical studies to develop research on the EO and business practices in MSEs found in low-income and emerging economies. Examples are welcome from micro and small businesses engaged in what can be classed as artisan work. This may include work in cultural artefacts in the form of creative arts, crafting and design, as well as bricolage.

The special issue encourages contributions within the context of low-income and emerging economies that explore, but not limited to, any of the following topics:
– Family businesses
– Rural enterprises
– Ethnic and indigenous entrepreneurship
– Small business management
– The determinants for setting up MSEs
– The dynamics of micro-enterprises
– Exploring the support mechanism for MSEs
– Strategies MSEs engage to deal with market instability
– The growth strategies of MSEs
– Diaspora networks and MSEs
